Marie-Celine Farver RN BSN IBCLC RLC

Marie Farver is a registered nurse and internationally board certified lactation consultant. She has been a labor and delivery nurse since 1984, and works in a birthing center where she also takes care of mothers and babies after delivery. She has been a doula in the labor and postpartum settings for many years. She has helped breastfeeding mothers and babies for over 25 years, in the hospital and in the home.

Marie also teaches childbirth and breastfeeding classes, and educates mothers about baby behavior and meeting their growth and development needs. She and her husband of 26 years have four grown children.

As a Christian, faith permeates all of her life. She has learned much of God’s design in birth and the great blessing that comes with following His design.

Nurse Talking to Patient

Birth

...is not a result of blind random chance and chaos, a mindless physical function. Rather, there is a beautiful and healthy design to birth, and the design works best when we work with it.

Quotes

We are not purveyors of birth, but its servants. When we try to take charge of it, we hurt it, and mothers and babies suffer too. Rather, let’s acknowledge it is very competently designed. Birth is not a pain; birth is not terrible; birth is not scary. Birth is beautiful! I think it gets forgotten that labor is not essentially about pain but about a new person coming into the world! Let’s get the focus back on the baby; labor is the process, not the end result!”

Birth is a normal, healthy life event undertaken by a normal healthy person; it is not broken so doesn’t need fixing. It is not inherently unsafe so doesn’t need rescuing. When you work with the design, you find that it works. When the rare event happens that it falls out of normal, or a complication arises, then it becomes healthy to intervene and we do so to restore health.

We have taken a normal healthy life event and messed with it, rather than working with the design, and so have induced an abnormal and unhealthy status upon it. When we mess with that which is normal and healthy, we then have to fix our messes. The mess is compromised health outcomes for mother and baby, either reflected directly in the health and wellbeing of mother and newborn, or indirectly, through undermining breastfeeding. And a fixed mess will lack the integrity and robustness of the original.

There is something sacred about human birth. Human birth is the only event in history when something eternal enters into time. This is because a human being has an eternal soul. This is because a human being is made in the image of God. We are not a mere mass of cells. It is not that our existence begins at birth, just our system of accounting time. Our existence as a human being begins at conception. That person is alive with an eternal soul! This person then enters into what we count as time at the moment of birth. A human being, with an eternal soul, then begins life in time.
